Pool problems

Why is my fibreglass pool faded or chalky?

A once-smooth fibreglass pool may gradually lose its shine, feel rough or leave a powdery residue. These changes can have different causes, and the right response starts with identifying the condition of the surface.

Common signs of surface deterioration

  • A faded, patchy or dull-looking colour
  • A chalky or powdery surface when touched
  • Roughness that makes the pool less comfortable to use
  • Stains that don't respond to ordinary maintenance
  • Blisters, cracks or areas where an older coating appears to be lifting

Why does the surface change?

Age, sun exposure, water balance, unsuitable cleaning methods and the condition of existing coatings can all contribute to surface wear. A chalky appearance is not enough by itself to diagnose the exact cause. Blistering or delamination may require a different repair approach from simple cosmetic fading.

Will cleaning fix it?

Some deposits and staining can be addressed through appropriate water care or cleaning. But if the underlying finish is degraded, cleaning alone won't restore the original coating. Avoid abrasive treatments and unverified chemical remedies until the surface has been assessed: an unsuitable approach can make an already damaged finish worse.

When might restoration be suitable?

If the pool shell is suitable for restoration, specialist preparation and resurfacing may renew its appearance without replacing the entire pool. However, not all damage is merely cosmetic. Cracks, leaks, moisture issues or widespread coating failure must be assessed before recommending a finish.

What should you do next?

Take clear photographs of the surface in daylight, note where problems occur and record whether the texture has changed. A specialist can then help determine whether targeted repair, resurfacing or further investigation is appropriate.
