Fibreglass pool osmosis: signs, causes and repair options

Blisters and bumps in a fibreglass pool can cause concern. But not every blister is osmosis, and photographs alone cannot identify the underlying condition. Here's what homeowners should know before committing to repairs.

What does osmosis mean in a fibreglass pool?

Osmosis-related damage can involve moisture migrating through a laminate or coating system and creating blistering or deterioration. In pools, the signs and severity depend on the original materials, existing coatings and the condition of the shell.

What signs should I look for?

  • Raised bumps or blisters on the pool surface
  • Changes in the finish around individual blisters
  • Patches of coating failure or deterioration
  • Widespread roughness or uneven surface texture

These symptoms can have other causes, including a failed previous coating or localised defects. An inspection is needed before using the term osmosis as a diagnosis.

Can a pool with blisters be repaired?

Some affected pools may be suitable for localised repairs, broader preparation and resurfacing, or a barrier-focused restoration system. Others may require investigation or work beyond surface restoration. The appropriate scope depends on the cause, extent of damage and suitability of the underlying shell.

Why preparation matters

Applying a fresh coating without addressing failed material or moisture-related concerns may not resolve the problem. A written scope should explain which areas will be prepared, repaired and resurfaced and what limitations apply.

Important: Do not puncture blisters or attempt chemical treatments based on an online diagnosis. Get the pool assessed before deciding on repairs.
